Here are some pictures from the 2017 Championships to get you in the mood for some worm charming.
Thanks for your support. See you on June 9th!
In early 2013, Ruth Atherton, Jeanette Aspinall and Caroline Midgley were discussing how to raise much needed money for repairs to St Elizabeth’s Church, Aspull. A lot of wine was being consumed and the ideas got better and better (well they thought so anyway!). Worm Charming was suggested. After much laughter and hilarity at the thought of participants competing to lull the poor earth worm out of the ground, the idea was born. It was hastily written down on the back of a napkin.
What Happened Next
Ruth approached the Friends of St Elizabeth’s fundraising team at their next meeting with the idea. As you can imagine, there was a mixed response, however, everyone was willing to get stuck in and give it a try.
In March 2013, the first Aspull Worm Charming Championship was held. It was a great success and has become a very important day in the village of Aspull. Over the past few years people from the parish have also become involved to provided the infrastructure to make it happen.
